Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics) Review

This is a great piece of work. The essays are short and concise. If you plan on taking graduate exams, START with this book to find out how to carve up the discipline. Read this book about 1 week before your exam, you won't be sorry.
This is also a book with theory applications. The chapters on structures and rational choice are particularly strong in that vein. This is also a book you will want to own so you can mark it up.

Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics) Feature

Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics) Overview

Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure is a completely revised second edition of the volume that guided thousands of scholars through the intellectual demands and gratifications of comparative political science. Retaining a focus on the field's research schools, it now pays parallel attention to the pragmatics of causal research. Mark Lichbach begins with a review of discovery, explanation and evidence and Alan Zuckerman argues for explanations with social mechanisms. Ira Katznelson, writing on structuralist analyses, Margaret Levi on rational choice theory, and Marc Ross on culturalist analyses, assess developments in the field's research schools. Subsequent chapters explore the relationship among the paradigms and current research: Joel Migdal examines the state; Mark Blyth adds culturalist themes to work on political economy; Etel Solingen locates the international context of comparative politics; Doug McAdam, Charles Tilly, and Sidney Tarrow address contentious politics; Robert Huckfeldt explores multi-level analyses; Christopher Anderson describes nested voters; Jonathan Rodden examines endogenous institutions; Isabela Mares studies welfare states, and Kanchan Chandra proposes a causal account of ethnic politics. The volume offers a rigorous and exciting assessment of the past decade of scholarship in comparative politics.

My fellow Americans:

It is our pleasure, our honor, our duty as citizens to present to you Duck for President. Here is a duck who began in a humble pond. Who worked his way to farmer. To governor. And now, perhaps, to the highest office in the land.

Some say, if he walks like a duck and talks like a duck, he is a duck.

We say, if he walks like a duck and talks like a duck, he will be the next president of the United States of America.

Unjust Deserts - Book Review

เขียนโดย Eva | 13:05

How to combine a law of physics, corrupt politics, undivided national wealth and uncontrolled greed, in order to generate economic inequality and delusional prosperity. Now comes a book, should have been titled Stolen Wealth. That would be more in line with its long subtitle: How the Rich are taking our common heritage and why we should take it back.

In today's world of economic misery, and it falls to you: Should there be higher taxes on the richest peoplein society? Gar Alperovitz and Lew Daly do a very good case that considerable research shows that yields a large part of the success of the wealthiest people from ancestral knowledge that the society possesses. The incredible economic inequality we see today is therefore morally unacceptable.

Buy if President Obama and his many economic advisors represented in the intellectual arguments in this book, which is very likely, then we can expect a strong push forhigher federal taxes on the highest income and capital gains as well as accumulated wealth through higher estate taxes. This book presents the central argument for such a policy, namely the incredible importance of the inherited knowledge for long periods, which collected the basis for economic success of certain individuals. Her elegance, creativity and hard work can not explain their disproportionate wealth. It largely results from inherited, cumulativeKnowledge from the past.

According to this understanding, it is not so much about redistribution of wealth from the richest people on the other it is more about the morally right and necessary measures to prevent the unjust and immoral ownership of wealth, a relatively small proportion of the population is not properly corrected (albeit legally) achieved.

What must the Americans are told by politicians that "more and more knowledge gain across the generations, is of central importance tothe creation of wealth ", say the authors. why is the proper role of government is to ensure that many more people to do something along the lines of that wealth. And the practical way to do this through higher taxation of the unjust deserts now enjoyed by the upper class.

With regard to these other words, the economic decline of the middle class and the expansion of the working poor result from all these unjust deserts. All the free inherited wealth, which has resulted from knowledge that a fewPeople have managed to profit unfairly from it. This has produced rising economic inequality and the increasing economic suffering of so many Americans.

This is not the easiest book to read, because it is written in an academic rather than a populist style. Nevertheless, for all that a better justification for the "taxing the rich" policy, it is important to want to read. Another good title for the book would be: fighting economic injustice.

Book Review: The Straw Bale House

เขียนโดย Eva | 12:42

If we have learned something from their childhood, it was not to build our houses out of straw. After all, that big bad wolf was just that, the blow down. But that was before the world the numerous advantages of using compressed straw bale knew as an important building material as described in the book The Straw Bale House. Book This easy-to understand, is in its comprehensive education on how to build with straw, so that no wolf (or tornado can for that matter) ever blow it down. TheBook covers, why and how to create one build with straw bales, but also the necessary details to illustrate an aesthetic and sound at home at an affordable price. To describe this point, The Straw Bale House offers a good number of the Enlightenment impressive black and white graphics and color photos. I must say, The Straw Bale House is the bible of the straw bale construction books and therefore an essential starting point for anyone in the straw bale homeConcept. After buying the book (well worth the price), I had no qualms about going ahead with my project and building straw bale. Both new and experienced developers appreciate the clear, simple instructions and diagrams, and practical explanations for dealing with building codes and the insurer.

The Straw Bale House also cultivates you to the many practical benefits of building with straw bales is compressed. In addition to the inexpensive, straw baleserve as a clean and easy to work material that is simple, with. The book describes offers many important advantages, such as straw super high-energy efficiency (a necessity in today's high heating costs), superior fire resistance, while at the same time seismically correct. In addition to this purely natural materials, such as a recycling agricultural by-product of grain production, sustainable, renewable resource. While enthusiasts of straw bale construction praise ofDesign for the reasons mentioned, is the real reason why so many people are turning to straw bale homes are because they are so often extraordinarily beautiful and inviting as many colors The Straw Bale House shows photographs. Sure, cheap does not have to mean poor quality or unattractive. The natural materials in creating a straw bale home uses a lot of shine chi. And so in this book. Book Review - The Judge Talks Politics by Judge Francis J Donovan

เขียนโดย Eva | 12:41

The judges should be impartial and should never get involved in politics. Right? Well, not quite, and it is "not exactly" part of this book, Francis J Donovan, The Judge Talks Politics is so interesting to read. Francis J. Donovan grew up as a poor Irish Americans in the arena of Long Iceland politics shortly after earning his law degree from the University of St. John's. During his decades of public service, he rose through the ranks from deputyDistrict attorney in Nassau County, a district court judge, 1959 to 1973. It was a successful and illustrious career, which almost never off the ground, especially since by his own admission that, "he was never told was how to play the political game." Was Donovan's problems began when he for reelection for a third term since stood as a magistrate. That they support the republican, democratic and conservative parties as well as his re-election seemed to getsecured. But there was a small problem.

Joseph Margiotti, the omnipotent head of the Republican Party on Long Iceland, demanding that he secured the agreement of the Conservatives. Donovan declined to it on the ground that this violated the Canon reject judicial ethics. He also felt that the Liberal and Conservative parties of Nassau County should be required that their power to swing the vote if necessary in order to nominate a rival party in an upcoming election. Margiotti answerDonovan's act of disobedience was quick and brutal. First he had him stricken from the Republican ticket and then he set out to remove him from office with the declaration, "it is Donovan, his family, and friends against the organization."  What ensued next, was a tough and bloody battle that Donovan won against insurmountable odds, primarily because of his dogged determination, an in depth knowledge of how the judicial system works, and a well organized network of loyal friends and Colleagues.

In many ways, the famous Margiotti vs. Donovan case was a turning point for politics in Nassau County. It was also a turning point in the career of Francis J Donovan. From this point on, he understood how the political game was played and he played the game confidently, winning one battle after another as he reached inside the system, his personal goals. The court papers say Characterization policy as to all book about Long Iceland> Politics does not do it justice. Between the covers of this compact, well-written book, a reader a snapshot of Nassau County history can be found a very important time, details of how politics really works, tips on how to analyze issues, discuss how to seek political office and much more. Do not want to discuss Whether you're looking for a casual reader or a political junkie snippets of information, politicians in general, the judge talks politics is a worthwhileto read. I strongly recommend it.

Japan: The Intellectual Foundations of Modern Japanese Politics (Phoenix Book) Review

This was a great book. It was easy to read, small (only 148 pages), direct and effective. The scholarship shows excellent depth of research, but the vocabulary and writing style is simple. Tetsuo Najita makes the highly abstract intellectuals of the most recent centuries in Japan accessible to any reader. Nicely done. Najita looks not just at history, but the driving forces, the ideas that motivated the people who inspired history. He brings new focus to Japanese history. For academic researchers or the curious Japanophile, I strongly recommend this book. I'm not a historian. I'm a graduate student studying sociology and anthropology. Still, the value of this book is not limited to history. Najita's willingness to breakout of the rigid confines of what History has been and move into new material in the history of ideas is exciting. In this, his work touches on history, philosophy, religion, sociology, anthropology and politics. The combination of seemingly divergent disciplines is surprisely smooth.

Japan: The Intellectual Foundations of Modern Japanese Politics (Phoenix Book) Feature

Japan: The Intellectual Foundations of Modern Japanese Politics (Phoenix Book) Overview

Historians have long been aware of the richness and complexity of the intellectual history of modern Japanese politics. Najita's study, however, is the first in a Western language to present a consistent and broad synthesis of this subject. Najita elucidates the political dynamics of the past two hundred years of Japanese history by focusing on the interplay of restorationism and bureaucratism within the context of Japan's modern revolution, the Meiji Restoration.
